I was wondering about this, but being too lazy to just google it, so was pleasantly surprised when nbcnews.com found it to be a newsworthy enough story. Turns out it’s just done now out of tradition/ rite of passage, but used to be done (jokingly) to make sure the medal was real gold based on whether you could make a soft indent with your teeth. Turns out the gold medals aren’t even made from gold anymore, just plated in it. Slightly longer history here. And now you know!
